The American School Counselor Association (ASCA) states that an essential component of school counselor development is competent supervision (ASCA, 2010). In this training, we strive to build your competency as a site supervisor by covering important information about the development and supervision of school counselors-in-training. In addition to your training, you have already read and understand your role as a site supervisor for students enrolled in Oregon State University's Master's in Counseling program with its emphasis on the profession of school counseling. We are proud to be a CACREP accredited program. One of the CACREP requirements is to provide supervision to practicum and internship students while they learn on-site. In addition to this requirement, Site Supervisors are required to have relevant training in supervision prior to being matched with a practicum student. In this training provided by the Counseling Academic Unit at Oregon State University, we will cover the importance of site supervision by providing information that targets: (a) the developmental stages of counselors in training, (b) the supervisory relationship, (c) models of supervision, and (d) methods and techniques for providing feedback. These four topics are aligned with results from recent research on site supervisory self-efficacy (DeKruyf & Pehrsson, 2011). As such, this training seeks to build and strengthen your own self-efficacy skills in becoming a school counselor site supervisor through the use of evidence-based practices and current research, as recommended by (Franklin & Eakin, 2015) .
In addition to these four topic areas, an emphasis on multicultural competence in supervision will be provided, as every situation is unique and multicultural by nature. Strengthening one's own multicultural competence not only benefits you, but such modeling invites your supervisee to engage in self-reflection and expand on their worldview, which ultimately strengthens their work with students. By taking this training, we hope you gain a skill-set in basic site supervision that will contribute to the professional growth of your supervisee, improve the lives of the students they work with, and ignite and foster a curiosity for providing supervision within the school setting.
This course takes approximately 4.5 hours to complete and can provide 4 PDUs (Professional Development Units) or 0.4 CEUs (Continuing Education Units). This course does not provide transferrable academic credit.
